Chapter 23
Hell hole
Jodie stepped through the rusted gates of the abandoned prison, a feeling of dread washed over her. The moon, obscured by dark clouds, offered little light to guide her way.
But Jodie was always up for a challenge, and as she ventured deeper into the dark corridors of the prison, she couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She had always been drawn to the unknown, and this place seemed to radiate an eerie energy that she couldn't resist.
As she entered the prison, Jodie felt a chill run down her spine. The atmosphere was eerie and unsettling, but at least it was better than being out in the open with the Sperminators on her trail. She explored the dark, musty corridors cautiously, her crowbar at the ready.
Her footsteps echoed through the empty hallways, the sound bouncing off the crumbling walls. The air was musty and thick, like she was wading through a pool of fog. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone, or something, was watching her every move.
As she made her way through the cell blocks, she noticed strange markings on the walls. They looked like claw marks, and they seemed to follow her as she walked. Goosebumps rose on her skin, and she quickened her pace.
She came across a door that was slightly ajar, and she couldn't resist the urge to peek inside. The room was dark, but she could make out a figure sitting in the corner. She cautiously crept closer, her heart pounding in her chest. As she got closer, she realized it was just a mannequin, but its lifeless eyes seemed to stare straight into her soul. She stumbled backwards, her heart racing with fear.
Feeling unnerved, Jodie decided to explore the rest of the prison. She came across a long corridor with several doors on either side. The doors were all closed, but she could hear faint noises coming from inside. It sounded like muffled screams and cries for help.
Jodie tried to brush it off as her imagination, but the noises seemed to get louder as she approached one of the doors. She slowly pushed it open, and her heart stopped when she saw what was inside.
It was a torture chamber, filled with all sorts of horrifying instruments. Blood stained the walls, and she could see the marks of someone trying to escape. Jodie thought to herself. ‘Fuck this shit, I’m out of here’. Jodie made her way to the other side of the prison to begin exploring.
Nervously she made her way to the guard's office, she heard a faint noise coming from one of the cells. She cautiously approached it, her heart beating faster with each step. What she saw inside made her freeze in fear.
Lying on the floor was a woman, naked, malnourished and barely conscious. Her body was bruised and battered, her face swollen and covered in blood. Jodie realized that this woman had been subjected to the same torture as she had seen countless others endure at the hands of the Sperminators.
‘Help me, please help me’. The woman said desperately.
Without thinking, Jodie rushed to the woman's aid, trying to comfort her. The woman, barely able to speak, whispered her name - Sarah. Jodie knew she had to get Sarah out of here and to safety. She searched the guard's office and found a key for the cell. With some effort, she managed to get Sarah out and into the safety of the office.
Jodie looked for a weapon. She knew it was only a matter of time before the Sperminators found them, and they needed to be prepared. Among the piles of office supplies, she found a fire ax. It was heavy, but it would have to do.
Jodie offered Sarah canned food to regain her strength, 'Hi, I'm Jodie,' she said, trying to sound friendly. 'Are you alone here?'
Jodie noticed that Sarah was shivering, she wrapped a coat around her. 'I have some canned food with me. Would you like some?' Jodie offered.
Sarah's eyes widened with surprise, but she quickly composed herself and nodded gratefully. As they shared the food, Jodie couldn't help but wonder who Sarah was and why she was alone in this abandoned prison.
'How long have you been here?' Jodie asked, trying to break the tense silence between them.
'I've lost track of time,' Sarah muttered, staring at her can of food.
Jodie sensed that Sarah didn't want to talk about her past, but the inquisitive side of her couldn't help but ask, 'Why are you here?, who locked you in the cell?’.
Sarah took a deep breath before answering. 'I was on my way to a safe house with my family. But we got separated when a group of looters attacked us. I managed to escape and ended up here. I thought I could find some supplies and maybe even my family, but I haven't seen or heard from them since, it’s going to sound strange but I don’t know who locked me in the cell, I went to sleep one night and when I woke up the door was locked’.
Jodie's heart ached for Sarah. She couldn't even imagine going through something like that. 'Is there anyone else here with you?' she asked, hoping to divert the conversation to a less painful topic.
Sarah shook her head. 'No, I've been alone since I got here. Seeing you is the first human interaction I've had in a long time, besides the looters and other dangers out there.'
Jodie's heart went out to Sarah. She couldn't imagine being alone in this terrifying world. Suddenly, the sounds of footsteps echoed through the prison, making them both freeze in fear.
'Quick, hide!' Jodie whispered urgently, pulling Sarah towards a hidden staircase that led to the upper levels of the prison. But Sarah just giggled with a creepy tone and said, 'There's nobody there, Jodie. It's just the ghosts of the inmates.'
Jodie rolled her eyes, not believing a word of it. She thought Sarah was just trying to scare her, but her bravado quickly turned to fear when she saw Sarah's expression. Her eyes were no longer filled with fear, but something else – something sinister.
'What's wrong with you?' Jodie asked, her voice shaking.
'Nothing,' Sarah replied, still giggling. 'I just want to show you something.'
Sarah instructed Jodie to follow her into the dark damp cellar. Sara’s legs barely able to hold her fragile frame, Jodie hesitantly followed as Sarah made her way to a dark cell. Jodie quickly realised that this was a solitary confinement cell, the hole, the place to punish prisoners.
Jodie's heart was pounding in her chest as she grabbed Sarah's arm for comfort. But as they entered, Jodie realized that something was very wrong. Sarah's once scared expression had turned into a twisted smile, and her eyes seemed to be glowing in the dark.
What's going on?' Jodie asked, her voice trembling.
Sarah laughed maniacally as she explained that she had been the one making all of those ghostly sounds – it was all part of her plan.
'You see, Jodie, this prison is haunted by the spirits of the inmates who were wrongfully executed here. And I have made a deal with them. In exchange for my soul, they will make sure that you suffer for the rest of your days.'
Jodie couldn't believe what she was hearing. She didn't believe in ghosts or deals with the devil. But as the ghosts closed in on her, their bony fingers reaching out to grab her, Jodie knew that this was not a joke.
She screamed as she ran towards the door, but it wouldn't budge. Sarah had locked them in from the outside, leaving them at the mercy of the vengeful spirits.
The last thing Jodie remembered before everything went dark was Sarah's wicked smile, and the chilling sound of her voice saying, 'Welcome to your new home, Jodie. You're going to be here for a very, very long time.' Sarah’s body dropped lifeless to the floor, she was nothing now but a rotten corpse.
Jodie was trapped in a dark, cramped cell, even her strength was no match for the thick, heavy steel door, Jodie was trapped for eternity, her only hope was the off chance of a survivor finding her, or a Sperminator to give her the sweet release of death.
From that day on, Jodie was never seen or heard from again. Some say that the ghosts of the prison still roam the halls, waiting for their next victim. And if you ever happen to come across an old abandoned prison, and you hear strange noises coming from within – just remember, sometimes, the scariest things are the ones we don't believe in.
